Info about: The Dog Father

The Dogfather is a provider and haven for dogs, cats, rabbits and even birds. If you have an animal that needs a sanctuary, love and companionship while you are away, then this is the place to take him or her.

Unique on Koh Samui and in the surrounding region, The Dogfather is far more than just a kennel and a cattery. As we all know, animals become morose and listless when caged up, so at The Dogfather, freedom is paramount. “This isn’t a zoo,” says Michael Egli, the brains behind the business, “We believe in occupying the animals, not letting them sit around. We walk the dogs up to 3 times a day. If a dog’s just sitting in a kennel doing nothing all day long, then it’s hardly any fun for him or her. We like to give them a home away from home. Just as the owner plays with the dog and takes it out, so do we.” The size of the cages also reflect an approach where liberty is taken very seriously. They are a very generous 1.5 x 8 meters, which is a good run, by anyone’s standards. Each has a separate sleeping area too. Cat cages are just a little smaller. It’s not just humans who love to go to the spa, dogs love it every bit as much, and Michael and partner Ilka have spa days for the animals. “It starts in the morning, early, when the owner brings in the dog. We give it a flea bath first, with specially medicated water that gets rid of everything that lives on the dog’s skin. Then there’s shampoo and conditioning, for which we use a brush which pumps out water, so it’s quite like a massage. They love it. Then they have their nails clipped if necessary, and their ears cleaned. After that it’s the normal schedule, plenty of walking, and then it’s feeding time...” When it comes to food, all the animals are fed with extremely healthy meals. We’re not talking about soya protein here, but the best of dried foods, and stews that Michael and Ilka cook fresh and which supply all the vitamins and minerals the animals need. And there’s even steak, too, bought from Tesco Lotus, exactly the kind that you or I eat.

we train and rehabilitate dogs. I would consider us as one of the leaders in the pet boarding business in Thailand. We offer protection or obedience training and I can make house visits as well. Grooming and spa days are the latest hits at our facility. We have been established for eight years over and have own premisses of 5000 square meters plus

Michael and Ilka know a lot about animals, although they are quick to add that neither has trained as a vet, and nor do they consider themselves as such. “If a dog has a problem, then we call a vet to come to see him or her. We’re able to dress wounds, give injections, administer medicine, but a qualified professional has to come and give the diagnosis and initial treatment.” Michael and Ilka also provide guard dog training, and if your pet has the temperament for this kind of work, then The Dogfather will do all that’s necessary. He prefers not to use the word ‘training’ but rather ‘shaping an animal’s behavior’. “This isn’t like other schools,” he says, “What looks like training to the outsider is actually forcing dogs into assuming certain sorts of behavior. We don’t do that, nor do we use punishment. Everything’s done through playing games and rewards.” The Dogfather is located in Maenam on 5000 square meters of jungle land. On the ring road, turn into soi 2, which is next to Angela’s Café, and then follow the specially marked yellow signs 2 kilometres inland. Pets can also be transported to and from their home. Dogs can be trained in Thai, English, German, French and Italian. For further information, please telephone Michael Egli on 081787 3701 or email him at mikee_ch@yahoo.com
